M Family – Battery Park, Charleston, SC

This shoot was different from any I have done to date, and it necessitates a confession on my part: did you know, I am NOT good with kids? Maybe it’s because I feel like I should be an adult to them when I still feel like a kid myself, or maybe their open eye contact unnerves me. I just know they see right through me.
These three made up the second children’s shoot I’ve ever done, and we started slow. I talked with their mom and watched as they adjusted to my presence, shooting off a few photos so they could get comfortable with the camera. I didn’t say a lot; I didn’t have to. My job is to observe, to capture, to reveal, not to intrude.
I set them up, followed them around, interacted when they invited – they made their own magic. Take a look:

You’ve “captured” them beautifully, Kelly, bringing out both their playfulness and their more quiet sides.

Life is life, Kelly. Whether an old soul in an old body, or an old soul trapped in a young child. I don’t think that I have ever seen children captured in such a beautiful way. No pretense. No fake smiles or cheesy. No phony posing or positioning. Just their essence, Light…so beautiful. They way they interact is exquisite.
You should photograph children more often. {now if only I lived a bit closer…I have four little ones that would have a lot of fun with you!}
I think you captured their souls.
So good.
{Happy Monday}

Wow, that last photo is the sweetest. They look like they’re trying something new, but there’s a strong companionship and a history of new things together in it too. Love it!

I love how real they are. Not all kids will ham it up like that, so you must be doing something right. Wish I lived close enough to you to enlist your services!

You are a superb photographer Kelly! I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I love each picture and am so happy that finally, we have pictures that are frame-worthy. No more boring stale photo studio shots for us!!

I love the one where you are below the kids. Where you flat on the grass miss Kelly? Did ya do it?! I think you captured what it feels like to be a butterfly or ladybug or worm or any other thing that kids marvel over with those giant smiles full o’ wonder and delight.
You are gifted indeed!
Blessings.
