[God in the Yard] “find / the moon”
Thursday, 15 July 2010
When L.L. Barkat asked me to look for a photo for her book, God in the Yard, she sent me the introduction and part of the first chapter to aid me in choosing a shot.
I was instantly captivated by the concepts she was presenting, concepts she’d illustrated herself already through much of her writing in her recent poetry release, Inside Out. She sent me the book a while ago, a gift from a heart I already treasure, a treasure to hold in my hand. I’ve had it months now, waiting for me.
Last evening, I finally managed to pick it up to read late, in the few precious minutes I get when no one needs me. I should have been sleeping, but in the last few weeks, I am not quiet when I lie down to rest. My mind spins with an outstanding, intangible “should,” and I seek out soft, talk at God about it, read until my eyes won’t stay open any longer.
I’d already read the introduction. But I read it again, because I like to read things cover-to-cover. By the end of the introduction, I knew how I would be responding to the prompts she placed throughout the book. She’d said I could take my time, do all that she offered, pick a few things, or just read. I was going to go with “just read,” but I knew I’d have to somehow engage, or what would be the point in having the book, really?
The introduction was two paragraphs. Two paragraphs and a poem I’ve already memorized, because it tells me about my life, about what it is to seek God, about knowing Him.
Find a single
tree, find
the moon.
It doesn’t
take much.
Just begin.- God in the Yard, p. vii
Since I’ve already found myself shooting daily for a few projects (and just because the camera is like coffee – I need it to wake me up on a given day) I think I will engage this book in photos – since that is where I began with it anyway.
So, L.L., I found that single tree, found the moon.
I’ve begun.

I really need to get this book! I’ve heard some great soul stirrings about it…The poem reminds me of one of my favorite psalms, 121: I lift up my eyes to the hills–where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth…

LL will have written the sequel to this book before I’m able to get to that part of my reading list, blast it all. I’m anxiously awaiting my turn.
And I’m loving that light you just found. Call it the moon if you’d like. I’ll just call it light.

Wonderful idea…so anxious to see what you’ll have for us. And I must get myself a copy of that book. Birthday money came my way…I think God in the Yard may be the perfect use for it.
