life, unquenched – a summer story

everyone came to see the works,
searching left and right out over
panorama, beyond here and now
watching for sky-bent flame and thunder.

i craned my neck and lens around
a shadow-man in front;
i found unquenched fire on water,
“you could swim in such fire,” i thought, “breathless.”

but i’d not have held my breath
for water-light, or left my summer tired
for melancholic riffled waves
silent blurry flames on sea.

“i want to live,” i’d said, and i did -
it was the water-flame that taught me
the life i seek when leaving home
is not always the work i think i’ll find.

    I love this story, Kelly. And the one you write every day by living your life. And your Independence Day photos? Awesome!!
